We researched four literacies, Digital, Information, Media, and Visual. Each literacy poses its own specific relevance and application, however, we understood that no literacy exists individually. Indeed, through our research we came to conclude that the term ‘metaliteracy’ is far more appropriate as a collective frame for modern literacies.
Introduced by Mackey & Jacobson, (2014) metaliteracy has emerged as the terminology used to describe and group new digital literacies as they appear. This involves a reframing of current literacy definitions and introduces a unifying classification of interconnected literacies. As its central principle, promoting metaliteracy should subsequently envoke critical thinking and collaborative skills within digital environments.
